A lamp, properly made, does only one thing: it changes the room. Everything else is decoration, and decoration is a different trade.
When a lamp is necessary, you can feel it the moment it is switched off. The room loses something it had not known it possessed. Conversation slows. The corners come back. This is the test we apply to every Penah piece before it leaves the atelier — we light it, we sit with it, we switch it off. If the absence is felt, the lamp is finished.
A decorative lamp, by contrast, can be removed without consequence. The room continues. The conversation continues. Nothing is missed. We do not make those.
